I'm seriously considering putting my shields back up full force and going back to being a loner again. Screw family, screw friends, I don't like hurting this much.

I have the feeling I may sort of know what you're talking about. All I know is that my shields, both metaphysical and purely mental made me as miserable as they helped me.
